WPDesigner » Simple vs Complex Designs:

Designs with complex structures are typically more fun to look at, but they’re also typically more cluttered and harder to use. I find it interesting that WordPress users haven’t gotten over the “premium” news and magazine themes craze because they’re mostly designs with complex structures (and not exactly done right either).

Not sure if I agree totally with the idea that simple is better. For instance, I think it’s true that a badly designed but simple site will fare better than a badly designed complex site, but I don’t think the converse is true. A well designed but complex layout will resolve itself into something more interesting than a simple design can, insofar as the complexity is an expression of the content of the site and not there for it’s own sake. Verkhovensky’s Internals is, of course, very simple. But I’d like to think that this is so because the content is better represented in such a medium - and not simply as a result of my lack of skills. Helps me sleep at night, anyhow.
